Living with Emunah: Finding Light and Strength in Everyday Struggles

Have you ever felt like you were doing everything right, but still things just aren't going your way?

You wake up on time, ace your to-do list, and yet a single challenge—an unexpected setback, a hard test, a missed train—knocks the wind out of your sails. In moments like these, it's easy to feel lost or even question why things happen at all. What if, hidden inside these very struggles, you had a superpower to help you overcome and grow?

Emunah: Your Greatest Power

In both modern psychology and ancient Jewish wisdom, the ability to find meaning and hope in difficult circumstances is key to resilience. Psychologists call it "cognitive reframing"—choosing to look at setbacks as potential opportunities to learn and grow. Judaism calls it emunah: trust that Hashem is guiding you, even when the way forward is unclear.

Imagine Josh, a bar mitzvah boy struggling with learning piano. No matter how much he practices, the song just won’t come together. Frustrated, he wants to give up. Then he remembers: the Torah teaches that nothing happens by accident. Instead of giving up, he tries a new approach—patience, trust, and turning to Hashem for help. This small moment is the heart of living with emunah.

Why Do Struggles Happen?

Secular studies show that people who view their challenges as purposeful report higher well-being and motivation. Judaism takes this a step further: every difficulty is hand-tailored by Hashem to help us become the people we're meant to be. The story of Rabbi Akiva is a powerful example—he started with almost nothing, learned with children, and through emunah became one of our greatest teachers. His faith turned obstacles into stepping stones.

Everyday Examples: Bringing Emunah Into Your Life

  • Missed Opportunities: Didn’t get the grade or job you wanted? Instead of spiraling into frustration, pause and reflect—"If it was meant for me, it would have happened. What can I learn here?"
  • Relationship Struggles: If you feel overlooked or hurt by someone, try adopting the emunah mindset: "Hashem puts people in my life for a reason. How can I grow from this experience?"
  • Feeling Stuck: Like water drops carving stone, consistency and faith eventually create change. Just ask Rabbi Akiva—and remember, slow progress is still progress.

Practical Steps to Strengthen Your Emunah

  1. Daily Emunah Checklist: Next time something goes wrong, ask yourself:
    (1) Do I believe Hashem knows what He's doing, even if I can’t see the reason?
    (2) How can this bring me closer to Him?
  2. Keep an Emunah Journal: Write down moments when things didn’t go your way but ended up working out—sometimes only much later! Looking back helps you notice Hashem’s hand in your life.
  3. Talk It Out: Pray honestly about your worries and frustrations, or share them with a mentor. Often, vocalizing our challenges opens space for new perspective and comfort.

Stitching Struggles Into Strength

Life’s hardest moments are not a sign that you’re failing—they’re invitations to activate your inner superpower. As Rebbe Yitzhak Levi once taught, “If I were God, I’d do just what He’s doing now.” When we let go of needing to know every answer, we create room for faith, courage, and transformation. Step into your day with emunah and see what new strengths you uncover!
