Picture this: It’s Monday morning. You’re grabbing your favorite coffee, rushing into work, and someone in the hallway flashes you a genuine, warm smile. Instantly, your day feels a little brighter—maybe, just maybe, you even start to smile yourself. But why does such a simple gesture have such a profound impact? And how can we harness that power to spread joy, not just for ourselves but for everyone around us?
Scientists have long been fascinated by the contagious nature of smiling. Studies show that when we smile—whether we genuinely feel joy or not—our brains release endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that lower stress and boost happiness. In one quirky experiment, participants were asked to watch cartoons while holding a pen in their teeth (forcing a smile) or with pursed lips (no smile). The ‘smilers’ reported finding the cartoons funnier and even felt better afterwards! It turns out that ‘fake it till you make it’ really works when it comes to smiles.
Our heritage has been celebrating the power of a smile for centuries. The Sages of Pirkei Avos (Ethics of the Fathers) taught: “Greet every person with a cheerful face.” Even when life feels overwhelming, Judaism encourages us to bring light to others—sometimes simply by showing them they matter. The Talmud even compares sharing a smile to giving a glass of milk: nourishing, energizing, and truly uplifting.
Let’s make it real with a story. David, fresh out of a tough meeting, hops into a cab downtown. Instead of sharing his worries, he smiles at the driver. Caught off guard, the driver can’t help but smile back. The positive energy lingers, and by the time the driver gets home, he’s in such a good mood he shares the joy with his family. By the next morning, even his wife’s workplace feels lighter. Smiles—like kindness—really are contagious!
The power of a smile is much bigger than we think. The great leader Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld was once in excruciating pain, but paused to compose himself before a visitor entered so he could greet them with warmth and joy—because, as he said, “the purpose…is to bring joy to other people.”
Your smile can brighten the world. And the more you share it, the richer your own life becomes—and the more you inspire others to do the same.
