Think back: Has someone ever given you a compliment that totally made your day—or, by contrast, a careless remark that left you feeling down? Words have that kind of power! Every day, our words can ignite smiles, heal rifts, build friendships, or, unfortunately, sow misunderstandings.
Did you know that according to both Jewish teaching and modern psychology, what you say—and how you say it—matters more than you realize? Jewish wisdom tells us that the world itself was brought into being with words. The phrase \"abracadabra\" comes from Aramaic, meaning \"I create as I speak.\" The Mishna teaches: “With ten utterances, G-d created the world” (Avot 5:1). So too, your words shape the world around you, a truth echoed in psychology: research shows that positive self-talk and encouraging language can actually boost confidence, resilience, and social connection.
Let’s get practical. In Torah, there are over 200 mitzvos connected to the mouth—that’s about a third of all the commandments! Why so many? Because words can heal… or harm. The same tongue that can offer a heartfelt thank you or comfort a friend can—if we’re not careful—spread negativity and diminish self-worth. The Chofetz Chaim dedicated his life to the laws of shmiras halashon (guarding one’s speech), teaching that careful words can bring light to ourselves and the world, while negative speech holds us back from achieving peace and even redemption.
Jewish thinkers like the Maharal describe the tongue as a bridge between the hidden and the revealed, heaven and earth. The Hebrew word for tongue, lashon, even hints at lifting others up or, chas v’shalom, bringing them down.
Picture this: You’re running late, stressed out, and someone in line at the store snaps at you. You have a choice—respond in kind or flash a patient smile and say, “Thanks for your patience—I know it’s a long wait.” In that tiny moment, your words could either escalate tension or invite calm. Moments like these don’t just “pass by”—they ripple outwards. In fact, psychologists have shown that acts of verbal kindness (even small ones!) increase everyone’s sense of connection and positivity.
Every word you speak is a choice—and together, our choices create the world we want to live in. Whether it’s the encouragement you offer a friend, the optimism you bring to your team, or the patience you show a stranger, your words matter.
So, are you ready to use your speech to uplift, inspire, and build a brighter world? Try it for one day—and see what happens!
