Standing for the Elderly

Standing for the elderly is a Torah commandment which teaches us about the importance of respecting older people who have life experience that has given them wisdom that younger people just don’t have.

Mipnei Seiva Takum

The pasuk in Vayikra 19:32 says, “Mipnei seiva takum v’hadarsa pnei zakein” - Stand up in the presence of the elderly and show respect for the aged. This course explains why standing up for older people is so important and what happens when people stop respecting each other. The elderly are, of course, not the only people who deserve our respect - we are commanded in kibbud av va’em (honoring parents), honoring grandparents and honoring rabbis. Showing deference to these important people in our lives is another way to show respect for Hashem and His Torah.
