Brachos for Lighting the Chanukah Candles

The first night of Chanukah comes. The children excitedly place colorful candles in their menorahs and the aroma of cooking oil fills the kitchen. The dreidels are ready for the games to begin and the family gathers to light candles together.

But wait! Before you say the brachos and light the Chanukah candles, take a minute to think about what each blessing means and what it teaches us about life, miracles and our role in the world.

This bracha reminds us of the significance of lighting candles in Judaism, from the lighting of the menorah in the Beis Hamikdash to the lighting of Shabbos candles each week. When the menorah was lit by the Kohen Gadol in the Beis Hamikdash, it symbolized the Divine light which shone on the Jewish people and was reflected out into the world.

The shabbos candles represent peace in the home and the inner light of the Jewish people. The Chanukah candles, on the other hand, are lit facing the public domain, to shine peace and light into the world at large. As Jews, we have a dual purpose – to maintain a spiritual home and to serve as examples for the people of the world.

Miracles Today

שעשה ניסים לאבותינו בימים ההם בזמן הזה

When it comes to miracles, there’s no expiration date. In ancient times, supernatural miracles made it easier to recognize Hashem’s might and His control of the world. Today, miracles happen naturally, so if you’re not looking for them, you can explain them away. But as Jews, we know that Hashem is in charge of each and every thing that happens, and that miracles are a daily occurrence. In this bracha, we remind ourselves that Hashem is watching over us and that His protection is the only protection we can count on.

Thankful for Life

שהחיינו וקיימנו והגענו לזמן הזה

On the first night of Chanukah, we add the bracha of “shehecheyanu” to thank Hashem for sustaining us for another year so that we can keep His mitzvos. We remember not to take our existence for granted, but to appreciate every day that we have in this world.

We wish you a meaningful and radiant Chanukah!
