The one exception to Hashem's perfect world
Ever wonder why Hashem built a world with such precise rules, laws of nature so exact that scientists spend their whole lives studying them, and then sometimes breaks those very rules? There's one exception to how Hashem runs His universe, and understanding it will change how you feel about being His child. It all comes down to a Malach named Michael and the unstoppable force of Hashem's kindness.
A world in perfect balance
Hashem created a world of stunning order. Every force has its counterforce. Every act of hesed is measured and distributed with perfect precision, just like all the other spiritual systems Hashem set up. Michael, the angel of kindness, was assigned to bring Hashem's hesed into the world within that careful balance.
But then there's the exception. Chazal teach us that Hashem loves His children so deeply that sometimes He overrides His own rules to give us His kindness. Even if it throws the whole system out of order. Even if everyone can plainly see that Hashem stepped in and broke the very laws He created. That's not a flaw in the system. That's a father who can't hold back His love.
When nature bows to love
Think about Sarah Imeinu. It was physically impossible for her to have a child. Then a visitor came to Avraham Avinu with news that Sarah would give birth. Chazal tell us that visitor was the Malach Michael, sent to announce that nature itself was about to be undone to make room for Hashem's hesed.
The same Michael went ahead of Klal Yisrael in the Midbar, clearing every obstacle so Hashem's children could pass safely. He defended the Bnei Yisrael and helped break the barriers between Shamayim and earth. Why the name Michael?
Here's the beautiful part. When Klal Yisrael crossed the Yam Suf, they were stunned. They watched their Father reverse the fundamental laws of creation out of sheer love for them. Moshe Rabbeinu stood by the shore and opened his mouth to praise Hashem, but he had nothing to compare it to. No power he had ever known came close.
The only words Moshe could find were Mi Chamocha, who is like You among all powers, Hashem. There is nothing that compares. Later, when Moshe finished the Torah in Parshas Haazinu and looked back on all the kindness Hashem showed in the Midbar, he was again lost for words. All he could say was Ein KaKel Yeshurun, there is no one like Hashem.
This is where the name Michael comes from. Mi Ka'Kel, who is like Hashem. When the world stops to make way for the kindness Hashem wants to give His children, the only response is awe. That's the Malach in charge of this assignment, and that's what his very name declares.
A father whose love knows no bounds
Rabbi Dessler teaches that the deepest kind of giver is one whose love pours out beyond calculation. That's exactly what we see here. When Michael appears, Hashem reveals that the power of His love for His children matters more to Him than keeping His own world in order.
Ashrecha Yisrael, how fortunate you are. Your Father in Shamayim loves you with a love that knows no bounds. When Yehoshua was preparing to lead the Bnei Yisrael into battle, Hashem sent His hesed with Michael to carry it to His children. This wasn't going to be an ordinary battle. Michael would lead the war above while the Bnei Yisrael fought below, with Hashem clearing every obstacle standing in the way of His beloved children.
